Sorry I have been unable to post. Been pretty busy and the wifi has been less than average.
Days have been longer since Germany. It seems in Milano the residents come out at night.
I have visited the Duomo and Victor Emanuel Plaza. Both are the main tourist traps of the city. The Castle Castillo was more up my ally. The Park Supremo right behind the castle was lovely and at the far end is an arch. It reminded me of the Arch de Triumph in Paris that seems like ages ago.
I also wandered around the city looking for signs of the future expo and was disappointed that the people I spoke with only knew the general area of the expo and did not seem to concerned or excited about the event. It was interesting to talk with the hostel host about Expo 2015. He is excited to be able to house many people for the event but after the expo he will leave. He will have his fortune and sell his business because he thinks no one will come after the expo is over. As a small business owner he cannot risk holding the hostel if he does not believe any one more will come.
After exploring the future, a look at the past was nice. Many of the old family churches still stand and have the reliquaries of generations on display.
I will be back in a few years to see the progression of the expo and the transition of the city for the upcoming events.
In reflection
It is too bad that I agree with the hostel owner. After my many experiences with expos I find that the general trend is less than desirable. The Expo is a big event bringing in millions of people to see what the country, city, and expo can offer. Shortly after the closing ceremony everyone tends to forget all about the ruins of the event. Many people along my journey can tell me about their own expo experiences, from Montréal to Lisbon. It seems everyone in Europe has been to an expo, but no one seems to care for the aftermath.
Maybe I should be writing an obituary for each expo instead of a blog. I hope that the soft nature of expo 2015 will be helpful in mitigating the left over “ruins” of the exciting event. However I cannot tell the future and we will have to wait and see.
It surprises me that structures that have stood for longer periods of time tend to maintain respect and dignity. Even with crumbling churches people still use them. For some reason it is the more modern structures that seem predetermined for vandalism, squatting, and abandonment. I hope Expo 2015 will bring a change to this trend.
